Some systems-such as Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home-let you control the lights with your voice and use lights from multiple brands, so you’re not stuck with one ecosystem. Smart-home compatibility: Smart lights that are integrated with other devices become even more useful, so you’re likely to use them more frequently.App features: Some lighting apps offer only basic on/off and scheduling options others include special effects, as well as features such as an Away Mode that randomly turns lights on and off to mimic occupancy. If you’re looking to use one of those platforms, check out Other good outdoor smart lights. This product worked well with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Siri Shortcuts, but it doesn’t support Apple HomeKit, SmartThings, or IFTTT.But we always prefer to use the highest form of security, whenever possible. When it comes to concerns about being hacked, smart bulbs are pretty low risk. Feit doesn’t offer two-factor authentication (2FA), a common security process that requires you to input a verification code when you log in to the app. And, even more confusingly, if you want to schedule an animation, the only way for it to work is if the animation was the last setting used before the bulb was turned off-you can’t simply tell the animation to happen at any time when the bulb turns on. Instead, to do either of those things, you have to create an automation, which you access from the main screen, under Smart Scenes. However, you can’t simply choose on or off, and you can’t pick a specific color and/or dimming level. For instance, when you click on Schedule, you can choose times for a bulb to go on and off. The Feit app can be confusing, and it has odd roadblocks. We also paired lights with these platforms to trigger lights with other smart devices (such as security cameras). Everything we tested can pair with some type of voice assistant, such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or Siri, so you can operate it by voice. We also set up Schedules and tested any other features. We used iPhone and Android devices to look at the app controls, to see how easy it was to set up and control the lighting devices, when you’re at home as well as away. (For suggestions, check out our guide to Wi-Fi routers and our guide to Wi-Fi extenders.) If you have problems getting good Wi-Fi outdoors, consider upgrading your router or adding an extender or repeater. Since all of these products are designed to go outdoors, we tested a variety of spots outside of our home to determine how well they stayed connected to Wi-Fi. For bulbs, we used a light meter to measure lux (or the amount of light that spreads in a given area), working with the same equipment, under the same conditions, at various angles and dimming levels. We also compared Color Rendering Index (CRI) ratings, when available, to judge color accuracy. We looked at specs for lumens, which is a measure of light output. ![]() ![]() ![]() 20-21.Īll races will be broadcast live, have additional races for age-group athletes, and take the 100km format of a 2km swim, 80km bike and 18km run. I think the listeners and the audience will enjoy learning about your background as you have a very humble beginning. You were previously on the Millennial Investing Podcast a year ago, back on episode 80 with Robert Leonard, for listeners that would like to check out that episode. Jesse, pleasure having you back on the show. Hey, everyone, welcome to the Millennial Investing Podcast. You’re listening to Millennial Investing, by The Investor’s Podcast Network, where your hosts, Robert Leonard and Clay Finck interview successful entrepreneurs, business leaders, and investors to help educate and inspire the millennial generation. I sincerely hope you enjoy today’s episode as much as I did, with Jesse Mecham. I will most definitely be revisiting this episode in the future as Jesse is someone I really look up to myself. When Jesse started YNAB, he would work on his business part time from 4:00 to 5:00 AM while working his full-time job 80 hours a week. I find Jesse’s story to be really inspirational. Jesse is deeply passionate about teaching individuals, families, and business owners YNAB’s four rules to help them gain total control of their money, which Jesse will be covering for us a little bit later.ĭuring our conversation, I chat with Jesse about what led him to start his business in 2004 while he’s still in college, when Jesse knew it was time to quit his full-time accounting career to go all in on his business, what is and what is not a budget, whether budgets are for everyone or not, even those with high incomes and high savings rates, why it’s important to look at an investor’s overall financial situation when assessing their own strategy, and much more. Jesse also hosts the You Need A Budget Podcast, The Beginning Balance Podcast, and is The Wall Street Journal bestselling author of You Need A Budget. Jesse is the founder of You Need A Budget or YNAB, and is also a personal finance expert and business leader. There have been reports of mid-IR communication systems that have used native mid-IR transmitters/receivers (e.g., quantum cascade lasers) to achieve up to 11-Gbit/s data rate using direct detection 7, 8, 9, 10. For example, it was reported that 3–5 μm and C-band wavelengths could have ~24% and ~40% atmospheric attenuation after 2 km sea-level horizontal free-space propagation with hazy weather conditions, respectively 5. Moreover, mid-IR wavelengths tend to have better penetration through inclement weather conditions 6. For example, it was reported that 3–5 μm and C-band wavelengths could have ~7% and ~11% atmospheric attenuation after 2 km sea-level horizontal free-space propagation with clear weather, respectively 5. For free-space optical communication links, the mid-IR has several transmission windows that provide a relatively low atmospheric absorption in comparison to the C-band (1530–1565 nm) 4. There is growing interest in the mid-IR region for potential applications in communications, sensing, and imaging in both free space and fiber 1, 2, 3. These results show the potential of using multiplexing to achieve a ~30X increase in data capacity for a mid-IR FSO link. We estimate that the system penalties at a bit error rate near the forward error correction threshold include the following: (i) the wavelength conversions induce ~2 dB optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) penalty, (ii) WDM induces ~1 dB OSNR penalty, and (iii) MDM induces ~0.5 dB OSNR penalty. They are converted to mid-IR and converted back to C-band through the difference frequency generation nonlinear processes. The WDM channels are generated and detected in the near-IR (C-band). As each beam carries 50-Gbit/s quadrature-phase-shift-keying data, a total capacity of 300 Gbit/s is achieved. We multiplex three ~3.4 μm wavelengths (3.396 μm, 3.397 μm, and 3.398 μm) on a single polarization, with each wavelength carrying two orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) beams. Here, we experimentally demonstrate wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) and mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) in a ~0.5 m mid-IR FSO link. Due to its absorption properties in atmosphere, the mid-infrared (mid-IR) region has gained interest for its potential to provide high data capacity in free-space optical (FSO) communications. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a great solution if you just want a simple emulation experience that you can access directly from your SteamOS environment.
